Whilst within these interior scenes I would experiment with different points of view to notice the effect this had on the natural light, which spilled into the environment, and also in turn the effect this had upon the scene as a cultural/social hub. Use of a tripod, a large depth of field and long exposure as I felt that you got more of a sense of the place as a social environment with long exposures compared to stills as Paolo Roversi describes "I think that if you don't live an emotion at this moment, if thee is no energy passing from you and your subject, the picture will be boring. But if you are a good photographer, and there is this energy, or spirit, or magnetism, it will be in the picture." This describes how I feel when documenting these interior scenes, giving a sense of the energy and environment of the places is much more clearly evident when the scene has played out for several seconds but been captured in a single frame.
What I found interesting when shooting was the juxtaposed artificial and natural light sources within the interiors and how the combination of these affected the space, particularly the pub scenes. I particularly feel that the Source pub interior scene was the most interesting observation of this intermixing of light sources as the lights reflections from the overhead lights onto the wooden floor created similar shadows and light spots as when light leaks out from clouds onto the ground, the use of orange lights on the walls is also suggests that this combination as well as the natural subtle light leaks on the wooden floor panels suggests a recreation of an outdoor environment within an interior setting- this was particularly striking to me as it considered a thought process of humans wanting to simulate the experience of being outside but from the comfort and warm of an indoor setting.
I also tried utilising the HDR technique within Millers Arcade, Preston, as I felt whilst there that, witnessing the scene first hand, I didn't believe that the long exposure or any single frame image justified or gave an accurate reflection of the interior, this was an issue which I highlighted in my first shot and I overcame this with the use of the HDR technique which gave a more accurate reflection of how the natural light affected the cultural space that I was within.
I feel that between the two environments that there was more scope and development in pursuing the interiors project specifically within the pub setting. I think that this was because I found this combination of alternate light sources and the effect this has upon the cultural/social space is more evident and varying within the pub scenes and also because as an interior space there is more to comment on pubs due to their nature of trying to be different and unique within their setting compared to shopping centres largely uniform and similar white wall space environments. This would allow for a more visually stimulating and noticeable cross-comparison but it may also be interesting to discover the success of the interiors being genuinely unique and different and also the impact this has upon the interior space as an environment.
