Whilst at the Liverpool Biennial I came across this series, 'Dalam', of 258 topographical photographs which focused on the living spaces of Malaysian people. 'Dalam' literally translates from Malay as deep; inside; interior, which juxtaposed with the photographs gives the viewer an understanding of how Malaysian people live. The method of typography makes the works visually more interesting as you notice patterns, comparing and analysing the symmetry and composition of the scenes. The images are particularly striking to me, as a series, because of the continual strong emphasis of colour and natural light reflections within the scenes. These components communicate to the viewer the rich and vibrant culture, a message which is contradictory to the seemingly empty and lifeless interior scene. I'd like to incorporate a similar emphasis on colour and natural light within my photography. I will however document communal and public interior locations such as pubs, cafes and shopping centers which supposedly should be cultural, social and animated hubs, meaning the effect that the aforementioned components has on the places all the more intriguing.
